Christmastime in the Cairngorms really is magical, especially for the little ones. I'm not sure you could find a more beautiful setting to meet Mr Claus, particularly if you like a steam train! So why not take the Santa Express from Aviemore to Broomhill (& back again). The journey is roughly 2hrs and the children all get a gift from Santa as part of the ticket, while adults can enjoy a glass of festive mulled wine and a snack box. Our kids loved this trip when they were smaller. It really is a fun afternoon out for all the family to enjoy, with the bonus of a beautiful backdrop. And for the geeks amongst us (you know who you are!), you can enjoy getting up close with a stream train.

On Christmas Eve there's always a Christmas parade, where Santa's sleigh is pulled down the street by real reindeer, accompanied by a pipeband! You couldn't get more festive. It starts at the north end of Aviemore, ending with fireworks at the Cairngorm Hotel.
