The loch is easily accessed on foot from the carpark making it exceptionally easy to enjoy a stroll through the ancient pine woodland. The circular route is roughly 5km of woodland tracks, suitable for most abilities and off-road buggies. You might even be lucky enough to catch a glimpse of the elusive red squirrel on your wanderings. And if you take a moment to look down (which will likely be often if you have small people with you!), you might spot some interesting fungi too. We'd also recommend taking a picnic to enjoy by the waters edge and having a paddle if the weather’s hot.
The more adventurous can enjoy the route by bike and this is certainly a good option for those with little legs. You can also cycle the whole way from Aviemore to Loch an Eilein, if you want more of a challenge.
There are lots of trails in the area and you can extend the circular route easily. Walkhighlands is a great website where you can find many walking routes including this one, which includes Loch an Eilein and Loch Gamhna.
Please note there is a charge for the carpark, and it’s attended year round. There is also a little shop and public toilets close to the loch.
