Loch an Eilein
Loch an Eilien is a really beautiful spot. Located only a 15 minute drive, or 25 minute cycle from The Shelter Stone, there's really no reason not to visit.
If you visit by car you can park in their ample car park found here. The car park is manned and you can park all day for a small charge. Just a short stroll from the car park you'll come across the loch and you won't be disappointed. You'll be met with a gorgeous view across the small beach to the castle ruin. Beautiful.
If you have little people with you, you might not get much further as it is a beautiful spot for a paddle. But if you can coax them away, you can enjoy a lovely walk around the loch itself. There are well maintained paths to take you the whole way round (approx 5km), suitable for bikes and buggies so it really is doable by everyone and takes about 2hrs with children. We can do it in around an 1hr when it's just the adults.
If you don't fancy a walk, you could take to the water instead. There's no water sport hire here but you can bring your own kit really easily. From the little beach you can paddle out to Loch an Eilein in no time, or further around the loch if you want more of a challenge. And if you're feeling adventurous you could land your board and explore the castle ruin. It's believed to have been built in the 14th century, so really is a little slice of history. Apparently there used to be a causeway across the water but now the only way to reach it is by water.
